Martin A. Zavala is a Mexican-American airbrush artist and comic cover specialist originally from Laredo, Texas and now based in Colorado — and one of the most distinctive voices in the retailer exclusive variant market today. His origin story is as cinematic as his art: starting as a graffiti artist and picking up an airbrush at just thirteen years old, Martin spent years honing his craft before rekindling his passion for art as an adult and stepping into the comics world through the collector and convention circuit.
Deeply inspired by the dark, gritty aesthetics of Spawn and Hellboy — and by the legendary Ashley Wood, whose raw painterly style Martin cites as his greatest artistic influence — he developed a signature airbrush technique using Iwata airbrushes, gouache, and cold press watercolor paper that gives his covers an unmistakably tactile, atmospheric quality. His first published cover was Department of Truth #10 (Image Comics), which opened the door to subsequent cover work on Radiant Black, Radiant Red, and Prophet (Image Comics), as well as TMNT: The Last Ronin — Lost Years #1 (IDW Publishing) — one of the most anticipated TMNT releases in recent memory. A regular guest at major conventions including MegaCon, Fan Expo, and Heroes Convention, Martin has built a devoted following among collectors who seek out his original airbrush pieces and convention exclusives.
His SweetDeevs retailer exclusive variant cover for NiFe WARS Issue #3 brings that same bold, atmospheric airbrush energy to the franchise — a natural fit for a sci-fi universe that thrives on dark, cinematic visual storytelling.
